Frankincense Essential Oils (Boswellia spp.)

Essential oils distilled from the resin of Boswellia trees are traditionally known as frankincense oils. Their aromas are balsamic, resinous, terpenic, and woody, often evoking associations with churches and sacred rituals. This is because frankincense resin—also known as olibanum—has been burned as incense for thousands of years in religious ceremonies and cultural traditions around the world.

Boswellia sacra Essential Oil – Oman :The finest oil in our frankincense collection is distilled from the resin of wild Boswellia sacra trees growing in Oman's Dhofar region. It has an exceptionally delicate, transparent, gently sweet aroma, thanks to its high alpha-pinene content (over 60%). Other monoterpenes are present in smaller amounts, including limonene (around 5%) and alpha-thujene (around 1%). Among connoisseurs, Omani frankincense is widely regarded as one of the world's finest.

Boswellia carterii Essential Oil – Somalia: We offer two Somali frankincense extracts produced using different methods. One is obtained by traditional steam distillation, while the other is produced by advanced CO₂ extraction, yielding an extract containing approximately 70–85% essential oil together with other naturally occurring plant compounds.

Somali frankincense is characterised by a rich chemical profile dominated by alpha-pinene (28%) and limonene (17%), together with alpha-thujene (6%), sabinene, beta-pinene, myrcene, as well as sesquiterpenes and diterpene alcohols. Both Somali frankincense oils have a beautifully recognisable, classic incense-resin aroma complemented by subtle conifer and citrus notes.

Boswellia serrata Essential Oil – India: Also known as Indian frankincense, Boswellia serrata resin is processed both by traditional steam distillation and by advanced CO₂ extraction. The resulting CO₂ extract contains approximately 70–90% essential oil, with the remainder consisting of other naturally occurring plant compounds.

Unlike Omani and Somali frankincense oils, Indian frankincense is dominated by alpha-thujene (approximately 55%), while alpha-pinene and limonene are present in lower amounts (around 9% and 4%, respectively). This gives the oil a distinctive aroma with characteristic nuances of damp, mossy wood.

Please note: these essential oils are not registered as medicinal products or biocides.

Natural plant essential oils do more than offer beautiful aromas. They help create a sense of closeness to nature and contribute to a calm, harmonious, and biologically supportive environment. Such an atmosphere is especially appreciated by people living in urban settings and spending much of their time indoors, and is considered beneficial for children's naturally developing emotional well-being.

The resins produced by frankincense, myrtle, pine, spruce and fir trees have properties that protect the tree from infections and invaders, heal wounds, accelerate the healing of damaged bark, and also act as pheromones, sending scent signals to pollinating insects and attacking pests.

Some properties of frankincense resin and essential oils:

As frankincense resin is one of the oldest substances in human history and is known as a panacea for a wide range of problems, it is not surprising that it has aroused the curiosity of modern scientists.

Here are some of the most interesting extracts from many scientific studies. Frankincense resin has been widely used as a chewing gum and spice since ancient times, and in Arab and other countries it is used in sweets, suggesting that it is non-poisonous.

Cosmetics, skin

According to scientists, boswellia resin has a positive effect on skin cells, i.e. it activates healthy cell growth and skin cell renewal, so incense tree resins are good for damaged skin. Traditionally, the resin has been used in various ointments and balms. Nowadays, essential oils are more commonly used for these purposes.

Frankincense resin and its essential oil have innumerable applications in both modern and traditional cosmetics. Mixed with beeswax, frankincense resin has been used since ancient times to treat blackheads and bags under the eyes. Frankincense resin extracts and oil are used in skin rejuvenating masks and anti-wrinkle creams; it improves the condition of dry, wrinkled and ageing skin.

Problems of seasonal changes

Frankincense essential oil is suitable for use during the changing seasons, in winter. However, be aware that use in children is slightly different from adults see here for how to use, and a list of other essential oils suitable for use in children during the changing seasons.

Insects

Like any smoke (think of bees and beekeepers with their smoky incense burners), resin incense is unpalatable to insects.

Joints and muscles

Frankincense essential oils are ideal for enriching massage blends for those who want to pamper their muscles or joints after exercise or other unpleasant sensations, and are a favourite with sports people and the elderly.  The essential oil of Boswellia serrata is particularly suitable.

Mood

When you want to achieve inner peace and a relaxed state of mind, frankincense can be used to breathe indoors in times of sadness, anxiety and spiritual negativity.

Perfumery

Frankincense is a much-loved perfume ingredient because of its characteristic, graceful, mysterious, liturgical scent. It is a favourite with both classic and niche perfumers.
