Oregano essential oil Origanum vulgare L.
The essential oil of oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) is classified as an antimicrobial "hot" oil, as the essential oils like cinnamon, clove, Egyptian cumin or thyme. The rich flavour and aroma of oregano (due to the volatile aromatic compounds – essential oils – accumulated by the plant) make it a very popular and valuable spice, especially for pizza. The concentrated essential oil is so strong when distilled that it is practically suitable for use during the cold season:
- indoor air purification (a few drops can be evaporated in a vaporizer when the room is unoccupied, as it irritates the respiratory tract),
- cleaning surfaces and floors (by adding a few drops to a bucket of washing-up liquid).
- the main compounds in oregano essential oil are phenol carvacrol and thymol.
Oregano is not so simple – it radiates not only beauty but also incredible biological power. Oregano essential oil should therefore be handled with care.
- Excellent aromatherapy quality - tested in the in-house lab, including GC-MS
- Certified organic raw material
- Phthalate-free, pesticide-free - does not disrupt endocrine system
- Air purifier & freshener.
Chemical composition: predominantly phenolics – carvacrol, thymol; also contains the monoterpenes pinene, micrene, para-cymene, and the monoterpene alcolchols linalool, terpinen-4-ol. The composition indicates the intensity of the essential oil – it is one of the strongest essential oils and has been widely studied for its antimicrobial effects.
As a 'hot' oregano essential oil, it has a warming effect and a pungent, strong odour, known as 'heavy artillery'. Like the other essential oils mentioned above, in addition to its potent effects, it poses the greatest risks: it can irritate the skin, respiratory tract and eye mucosa. Therefore, it should be used with extreme caution – dilute heavily when applied to the skin, and do not use around small children or pets.
- For indoor air cleaning (evaporating, washing floors and surfaces). It will be one of the most effective oils for eliminating bad smells, unwanted germs and cleaning the patient's room. However, if you have small children or pets in the house, vaporise or clean when they are not present. Ventilate afterwards and only then can the household be in the room. For older members of the family, vaporise small amounts, preferably in a blend with milder essential oils such as citrus, etc.
- For cleaning surfaces (add to water, cleaning agent, but remember to wear protective gloves). Use a small amount of essential oil to avoid damaging furniture or objects to be cleaned.
- During the cold season: evaporate, use to purify indoor air (as mentioned above, care should be taken around children and pets).
- It is very common and popular to use oregano essential oil indoors to keep parasites away. We cannot advise on indoor use, so we will not question this method - you should discuss this with your doctor. However, we do want to mention an important point: strong antimicrobials can kill beneficial microbes as well as pathogens, so excessive and prolonged use of oregano can destroy the microbiota in your gut and elsewhere.
- do not use on fresh skin as it may cause irritation; dilute with vegetable oil or butter;
- protect eyes;
- effects on pregnant and lactating women are unknown; essential oils should be avoided for the first 3 months of pregnancy and for infants up to 3 months of age unless necessary.
- despite the high phyto-, aromatherapeutic quality of this oil, the aromatherapy community cannot recommend internal use for therapeutic purposes, but such use is possible if prescribed by a phyto/ aromatherapist;
- do not use on cats, birds, fish, rodents, reptiles (evaporate in small quantities at home or use on your own); do not use on dogs, horses, muzzle, genitals, vaccinate;
