bot. Styrax tonkinensis

70% tincture of the resin of the blue-gum tree. The warm vanilla ambergris balsamic scent of benzoin lingers with cosiness and calm.

Nothing to do with petrol! The name benzoin comes from the name of the main odorous compound in the resin of this tree, benzoic acid. The resin (or resin), essential oil and extracts of the blue styrax are also known as Siamese benzoin, Laotian benzoin, Sumatran benzoin, depending on the area where the resin is collected.

Styracum trees grow in south-east Asia. The resin is obtained by peeling off the bark and making incisions in the trunk. The resin is distilled into an essential oil or tincture. The main chemical compounds are benzoic acid, benzoates and the ester vanillin, which gives Siamese benzoin its distinctive vanilla ice-cream smell.
