The fragrance is classified as floral. There are notes of vanilla, jasmine, nutmeg - a duo of sweetness and spice that becomes more intense as the flowers mature. Gardenia is a very popular fragrance in perfumery, but it is usually artificially composed of synthetic molecules, as it is very difficult and expensive to extract an authentic scent from the flowers.

The scented gardenia, named after the Scottish naturalist Alexander Garden, is a shrub that is common in Southeast Asia - in the forests of Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, the eastern Himalayas, Japan, Laos, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam - and is found in thickets along streams, on hillsides and in upland areas up to 1 500 m. It is also cultivated in gardens in many countries around the world for its beauty and intoxicating scent.

Since ancient times in China and Japan, tea has been flavoured with gardenia flowers. The flowers, fruit and leaves are used in traditional medicines in those countries.
