True Melissa essential oil, Melissa officinalis. The fresh, beloved lemony scent of lemon balm is well known to lovers of traditional Lithuanian herbal teas. In aromatherapy, Melissa essential oil is valued for its ability to create a calm and balanced atmosphere.

Although lemon balm has a strong fragrance, the plant produces very little essential oil — rarely up to 0.25%. Therefore, this oil is expensive, similar to rose, jasmine, and other flower essential oils, and is often adulterated by dilution with may chang, lemongrass essential oils, or synthetic substitutes.
