About the amla tree
It is a medium-tall deciduous tree growing in the tropics, belonging to the Phyllanthaceae family. In the natural environment, these magnificent trees grow from Myanmar to Afghanistan, from South India to the Himalayas. The fruits of the amla tree are especially interesting. Externally, they are similar to gooseberries (Ribes uva-crispa), although botanically these plants are not related. However, due to the similar appearance of these two fruits, amla is often referred to as Indian gooseberry. Amla fruit ripens in autumn and has a sharply sour taste. Collecting fruit is not easy – you have to climb trees and pick fruits / berries from the upper branches by hand. Sometimes long bamboo sticks with hooks at the ends are used for this purpose. Amla trees begin to bear fruit in 4-5 years of life. Adult amla trees grow 50-70 kg of fruit per year, the trees live for about 70 years.
